EARTHWARD @ Skylight Gallery, 538 West 29th Street, New York, October 24-November 23, 2013

Reception: Thurs, October 24, 6-8 p.m. On some very basic level we all connect to nature. How we acquire this connection differs from one person to the next, but it is there. No one is such a complete urban character that the wind, the sun, the presence of greenery, and the space and shape of the landscape does not in some way impose an aesthetic degree of encounter upon them. The shape that these elements take in art is another matter altogether. Throughout human history nature has always had a role in how and what we do. offshore companies, business interests and the need for transparency

Image
In April this year the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) announced that they have in their possession a database of offshore firms.  I had blogged about this back then.  http://article14.blogspot.sg/2013/04/icijs-offshore-files-singapore-link.html?showComment=1365318770280  A Singapore entity (Portcullis Trustnet) setting up trust companies was thrown up as a link by the ICIJ.  Portcullis has officially taken the position that its operations are perfectly legitimate and that no laws have been infringed.  To be fair there are legitimate usages for offshore companies and one has to proceed carefully to avoid jumping to conclusions.  In June this year, ICIJ released their database and made it available in a searchable format online.  http://www.publicintegrity.org/2013/06/14/12833/icij-releases-offshore-leaks-database-revealing-names-behind-secret-companies The link for the database is here: http://offshoreleaks.icij.org/ Before...

Diana Brodie: an interview

Image
Diana Brodie's been publishing poems for nine years. I know her because we attend the same local poetry group at her house. Hearing a poem of hers most months, I'm not surprised that she now has a book out. "Giotto's Circle", has been published by Poetry Salzburg. It's available from the Poetry Salzburg site. This interview was conducted via e-mail in mid-2013. 1. When did you start writing poetry? Has your writing gone through recognisable phases? Can you identify any breakthrough moments? I think that when I was very young I had the idea of becoming a poet. I read a lot, learned poems by heart and sat pensively by the window with an open book. My parents had firm plans for me – a job in my father’s office, starting as near as possible to my fifteenth birthday. When I was about eight, I had a schoolteacher who was especially good at teaching creative subjects and I so much enjoyed my first lesson in how to write a poem that when I arrived home from school, I...

Odpowiedni do Insanity

Image
Like a game of Battleships, but without the battle. Or the ships. Now here's something a bit different. The actual meaty goodness in today's Bad Meal is the picture above. You'll have to actually click on it to get a good look at it, at which point you can probably right-click, 'Save Image As...'. It's actual size is 2000x1100, so a little bigger than a widescreen monitor at 1920x1080 resolution. Anyway, what is this eye-bleeding monstrosity? Basically, it's one answer to the question 'How best to translate odpowiedni ?' And if you don't know Polish, then look at the picture and bear in mind that about 90% of all the English words in it are possible translations of odpowiedni . Sometimes, when you want to get high but there are no drugs around, all you have to do is open an English<>Polish słownik . How do we use this ridiculously beige scribble then? It's actually quite simple. Choose a word from the left column (any one of which is od...

Directory Sites and Article Submission Pointers

Are you still submitting article to article submission sites and directories to improve off-site SEO? Well if you're not, you should be, because there is some value to doing it, as you will see when you read this article! Submitting articles to article directories has been a mainstay of Internet marketers for many years as a means of link building and traffic generation for their websites. Recent changes to the way in which the major search rank sites has devalued the links coming from article submission sites, but there is still some value to doing high volume article submissions. This article takes a look at the way in which article marketing still has its place in SEO strategies and in helping to improve the authority of sites, improving link anchor variation to better comply with certain algorithm constraints and also funneling traffic. If you're not using article submission to boost your own site's authority, you could be leaving a lot of free traffic and money on the ...

Specialist or Specialised?

Image
Specialised equipment for translators and proofreaders Here’s a fact of life: ZUS. From the moment you are born until the moment you die, ZUS will have its hot, implacable breath on your neck, it’s eyes on your accounts and its paws in your portfel.  Here’s another fact of life:  Being confused about whether to use specialist or specialised . And whilst I can’t help you with the evil flying monkeys of our beloved social insurance institution, I can help you with that other thing. The answer is quite simple (for once) – specialist is a noun, and specialised is a verb. Dlatego, people and companies can be specialists ; they specialise in things and offer specialised services using specialised (or special ) equipment , itd itp. The brainiacs at Oxford define them like so: s pecialist   (n): 1 person trained in a particular branch of a profession, esp. medicine. 2 person who specially studies a subject or area. specialise   (v):  1 (often followed by in) a. ...

Article Submission Instant Approval Sites and Quality Content

There will be times when you need to submit some articles that you want published right away and don't want to have to wait for an editor to come along and approve your article first. Luckily, there are some article submission sites that allow you to self publish without needing approval, thereby providing instant approval. Of course, you can't abuse these sites by publishing garbage, or you'll soon lose your account and with it all your articles, so you need to exercise some common sense. That means at least publishing readable articles that have some usefulness to a potential real person should they come across it and decide to read it! What is Quality Content? When submitting an article to a submission site, it is common to use spun articles or those that are of low quality in terms of readability by a read person. While this is not what the search engines want to see in their index, its common practice nonetheless. The chances are that search engines will not index rea...
